Joel

It was time for Raphael to pay. What was worse than a demon hunter with an ax to grind? A brokenhearted demon hunter with an ax to grind. Come on, I know you guys have missed me and my drama.

I had an idea where Raphael’s nest was located, and it didn’t take me long to track down the abandoned warehouse outside of town. I found a parking spot out of sight and watched the building.

Vampire hunts were my forte. I knew where I stood. Fire, wooden stake, sunlight, holy water—plenty of classics at my disposal. Some of these demons who were so specific with the way they died could make life extremely difficult for a hunter. Vamps not only had various ways you could kill them, but they also evaporated into dust, and a hunt with zero cleanup was golden, my friends.

First tip: wait until sunlight. Only an idiot went in the dark. Even without the sunlight hurting them, they had better night vision than humans, so, unless you were desperate, you waited.

Sitting in my car, watching the warehouse, gave me time to think. If I wasn’t thinking about what unbearable torture Kayla might have possibly suffered these past five years while Luc and I were walking around, completely clueless, my mind went to the other thing that caused my heart to feel like it had been rolled around in broken glass … Tia.

If I allowed myself to think about her for too long, the consequences were self-destructive, to say the least. Drinking wasn’t doing it for me anymore. Meaningless sex? I’d tried that, and it was a humiliating story for, let’s say … never. Not in thatway. I’d have you know that I’d remained fully functional, but the girl had ended up being more of a therapist than a bedmate. She’d totally agreed I had done the right thing in letting Tia go, by the way, and I hadn’t even told her about the demons.

About ten minutes before sunrise, a couple appeared from the highway. They climbed down the slope, blended with the shadows, and slipped inside the main entrance. At least I knew I was in the right place.

The moment the first rays of light broke through the clouds, I was out of the car and headed for the warehouse.

Around the side, I found a broken window and climbed in.

“Maybe I should have borrowed Jade’s flamethrower,” I mumbled to myself, thinking back to the last time I had been in a situation like this. Just before we’d found Molonoch, I had torched a nest in Beverly Hills.

But, no, that was too easy. This was what I wanted. I yearned for it. Something to break through the numbness and make me feel alive again.

Tia knows leaving Joel is a mistake, but she needs time to heal after the showdown in LA. Although, now that she knows what is lurking in the shadows, is a normal life really an option anymore? And, if so, does she want it?

Joel is attempting to move on and failing miserably. His old life of no-strings fun no longer appeals to him, but Tia deserves a normal life—the one thing he can’t give her. He knows she’s better off, away from danger. So, when a case comes up in Tia’s hometown, he is shocked to find her front and center of the investigation.

Jade has spent too long running from her past. She wants to stay with Lucas and finally let him in, but when her time runs out, how will he react to the truth?

With the Jacksons determined to find out the truth about Kayla, their digging leads them to a new enemy … and some shocking revelations.
